Social bookmarking, have you heard of it? If not, I will briefly explain what it is, then let’s talk about how it can benefit your blog or website. In this introductory article I will talk about the very basic aspects of it. In the next article I will share specific tools and strategies you can use to benefit from this powerful part of the internet.
Think of the bookmarks on your web browser, this is a good example of bookmarking. Social bookmarking lets you organize book marks for a lot of your favorite websites and organize them with tags. A tag is just a keyword you use to categorize your bookmarks. Look at the bottom of this post, in small print you will see the tag l used for this post. Now you can use a tag to look up your favorite websites on that subject, but could someone else be interested in the sites you have found? Yes, this is where the social part comes in the bookmarks can be shared and then more people benefit. Other people can them rate or vote for the bookmarks making them a show of how popular a certain website can be.
Perhaps you are starting to see how this can benefit your website. The fact is your site will get more visibility, be indexed by the search engines more often and quickly, and just plain get you the traffic you want, if it is bookmarked. It will also help you rank better for the keywords you want most, in the natural search engine rankings. Also the people who use social bookmarking are the type of people who will probably contribute to your site content by commenting. These are all things you want to happen. You should definitely be using social bookmarking.
How, then, do you use this tool? That is what I will talk about in my next post on social bookmarking. Please feel free to share any thoughts, questions, or insights on this subject here by making a comment.
Websites abound on the internet, the problem is how to get yours to stand out and get some attention. How do you get more people on your website. I have commented earlier on the benefits of making your website an information resource on your subject but there are other things that you can do. We are going to talk about basic html so if you don’t know anything about html and how websites are made then you might want to go through a basic html tutorial first. You can find a good one at Tizag. In your web pages make sure that your title tags are not all the same! You would be suprised how many websites have the same or no title tags on any pages of there websites. Make sure that the content of the page coincides with the title tag, and the H1 and other header tags on the page. By all means, make sure to have more than pictures on your web pages. You need to have good quality text even if it is just product descriptions. A few word product description will get you zero traffic. Making sure that you do these few things will get you better rankings and make you more valid as a website, that means you will get more people on your website. Isn’t that what we all want? Give it a try no changes will equal instant traffic but if you keep doing things like this you will see more people.

Add to that a little bit of knowledge which I can share with you, and a simple plan and you have the beginning of a website that will fulfill your needs online. The information you need is the simple requirements to having a website. First you need a domain name which is www.MyWebsite.com. Next you need a hosting account you can get one at www.godaddy.com for very cheap. I also have them for 10 dollars a month with more support and options. It doesn’t really matter very much as long as you choose a reputable company. Then with simple free software you are on your way. You can buy online simple and cheap templates for you website and simply edit them to fit your needs. That is all you need to start your own simple website. The free software that you will need is filezilla for uploading your website files. If you are going to learn how to use the code of a website I recommend using an editor called PHP Designer.
Plan out a simple design on paper of what you want the site to do and how you want the pages to link together. You can then make simple changes to the navigation. There are many free resources of information for people starting out in web design and that would like to create there own. I will be publishing a series of Videos on the basics of it step by step.

How much flash to put into a website can often be confusing. Truthfully there are many different opinions about flash content in a website. Some sites are entirely composed of Flash. Certainly it gives you freedom and abilities on a website that would be difficult if not impossible to achieve otherwise. However the question remains what is the best thing to do?
It may seem to be a cop out answer but it depends on what you want to accomplish. If you are creating a sales website that will depend on organic search from the search engines that you will not want to use a 100% Flash website. Why? Because despite search engine advances they just don’t spider flash well, and they can’t examine the content hence you won’t rank as well as if you had plain text content.
If instead you are getting traffic through other means and ranking doesn’t matter to the site you are building you can use all flash if you want to.
I like to use a combination. Since content is king I like to have a lot of good solid content, then embed flash components as I might like to use. The advantage is you get spidered well it won’t affect your rankings and you get the benefit of things only flash can do. Be balanced with your use of flash and get the best effects for you efforts.
If you sell a useful product and have a nice looking website, you might be wondering why don’t I have more traffic on my website?
This common problem takes some work, but can be fixed. The solution starts with the way you and I as website owners think. We are often thinking like a store owner instead we need to think like a customer. Ask yourself this, what do I want from a website I am buying a product on?
Let’s illustrate it this way. Let’s say that you walk into a giant discount home and garden warehouse store, what is the one thing that you can never find that you need? Some customer service, right! A salesperson to help you find just what you need to fix the problem you have. You just need a little help and information. Instead you see row after row of products and no clue which one fills your need the best. It could have the best price in the world and be right in front of us and we wouldn’t know. We have all been there.
People feel the same way about websites that don’t give helpful information, or a way to ask a question and get a quick informative reply. If you build a website from a customer’s perspective, giving attention to providing high quality information, you will see results. Search engines and the people who visit your site will find real value and you will get more traffic as a result.
Some specific ways that you can do that are:
• Incorporating a blog into your website.
• Make regular and informative posts that could really help someone.
• Create a high quality Opt in newsletter with helpful information and tips
• Respond quickly when a visitor asks a question
Doing these things is definitely more work than an introductory home page and a shopping cart with descriptions. At the same time it will be much more successful. Try some of these changes and see for yourself.
What happens if you want to get started in web design? You don’t necessarily want exhaustive training from a class you want to know enough to post a simple website. Where can you get simple step by step instructions that will get you where you want to go quickly, easily, and it would be nice if it was free?
There is actually a lot of place like that on the web. I just want to share a fee of them with you.
The first place I recommend going to is Tizag.comThey have basic training in all the programming languages of the web in a simple easy step by step format. Yes, it is also free.
When you are typing in HTML you need some kind of text editor, usually you are told to use notepad. However, with that you won’t have a “html spell checker” so to speak
and no way other than experience to trace any errors you my have made. I recommend using a PHP editor such as
. It is free for personal use, which includes learning to create web pages. It also helps with more than just HTML. If you are going to use it for commercial purposes, it is well worth the money to purchase it. I wouldn’t be without it.
Don’t be afraid to try, it is easy to get started, and you can find a lot of help along the way!
