I am often asked what is the best thing for a computer to turn it off or leave it on all the time. I always say turn it off when you are done using it for the day. It is the best for your computer to turn it off and it saves an amazing amount of electricity. It can save you hundreds of dollars a year, but imagine how much that means of hundreds of people turn off there computers over night when not in use. It will save a huge amount of pollution, and energy resources.
Let’s all do our parts and simply shut our computer down when it is not in use, overnight. You will be saving your own power bill and the environment all at the same time.

I agree that computers should be turned off at night to save energy. But what about using hibernate mode or something like that? Is that as effective?

Hibernate mode is not a good idea, both hibernate and standby use a lot of energy still. If you are going to be away from your computer for an extended time like overnight, it is best to turn it off. Also I have seen hibernate mode cause problems on a system, if you are going to use one of the two say if you are away from your computer a shorter time, I would always choose standby and not hibernate mode. But for extended time always turn your computer off, that is the best.
